There is no single “ChatGPT Ads CPC.”

ChatGPT Ads uses auction-based delivery, so the price an advertiser experiences varies by objective, bid, competition, relevance, targeting and actual delivery. OpenAI documents CPM and CPC buying as well as conversion-optimized CPC (oCPC).

What bid should you start with?

OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT basics documentation currently recommends starting CPC campaigns with a maximum bid of $3–$5 USD per click. Treat that as platform guidance for an initial maximum bid, not as a promised market-clearing CPC or expected CPA.

The correct business question is not “is $4 CPC expensive?” It is: what is a qualified visit worth given our landing-page conversion rate and downstream economics?

Simple planning equation

Maximum tolerable CPC ≈ target cost per acquisition × expected click-to-acquisition conversion rate. Example: if a qualified acquisition is worth a $120 target CPA and 4% of ad clicks become acquisitions, the rough break-even planning CPC is $4.80 before accounting for margin, lead quality and attribution uncertainty.

For oCPC, measurement quality becomes media strategy

oCPC optimizes delivery toward a selected conversion event. OpenAI documents JavaScript Pixel and/or Conversions API as conversion-tracking options. If the conversion event is noisy, too rare or badly implemented, the campaign has a weak learning signal.

Before using oCPC, validate:

  • The event fires reliably.
  • The event represents actual business value.
  • You can distinguish a superficial interaction from a qualified conversion.
  • UTMs and analytics preserve a second measurement path for independent reporting.

Budget planning should include the learning agenda

Especially in a new ad surface, your first budget is buying two things: outcomes and information. We recommend defining the learning questions before spend begins.

  1. Which conversational intent clusters earn impressions?
  2. Which contexts earn clicks?
  3. Which creative promise improves relevance?
  4. Which landing page converts the context?
  5. Which conversion event is stable enough for optimization?

Minimum spend varies by country

OpenAI documents country-specific daily minimums in campaign guidance. Because availability and minimums can change, check the official campaign documentation at launch rather than hard-coding a global minimum into a media plan.
